Mumbai restaurant: Peetuk

Mumbai restaurant: Peetuk

During our India trip, Debarshi and I went to Mumbai. Our trip was work related but amidst the rains and high tides, we managed to do some local sight seeing with our friends and also went to a couple of restaurants with them. The only thing I have missed is the famous Mumbai’s street food but I am so glad, I have not come empty handed.

I know I have not been able to click a great photo but believe me the food was fantastic. We ordered some authentic Bengali food from a local restaurant – Peetuk and although it was expensive, the food tasted great. So, what do we have here? Starting from left I see Mishti Doi (this is a dessert prepared by mixing caramelized sugar while preparing yogurt, this tastes quite different from the plain or greek yogurt because of the preparation technique), Egg Chicken Roll (this is one of the famous Bengali street foods. This is prepared by shallow frying a flatbread and cracking an egg over it so that the bread and egg are fried together. Then it is removed from the skillet and is filled with varieties of vegetables like onion, green chilies, cucumber with a prepared dried Chicken. It is then rolled in a paper and served) Lachha Paratha (this is a layered flatbread, very crispy as oil is added between each layer, I have never prepared it myself but I love to have it with a gourmet Bengali curry) Kosha Mangsho (this is the authentic Bengali mutton curry, prepared with goat and slow cooked for a long time with a thick paste of onion, ginger and garlic. Debarshi is a master chef when it comes to this curry. He takes his own sweet time to prepare it. Of course the fried cashews in ghee add another flavor to the dish) Fish Chops (the round ones, this is another much loved appetizer in the Bengali families and mind it these are not at all like the ready made fish patties you find in the Indian stores. The fish is cooked and mixed with mashed potatoes and spices. It is then dipped in an egg batter and deep fried) and Fish Cutlets (the rectangular ones, this is another Bengali appetizer but these are different than the fish chops. They are delicious, crispy and super indulgent).

So you see, we did after all had great food in Mumbai. More in my next article.
