Mangsho Bhat (Chicken Rice with Potato and Tomato)

We Bengalis sure do love our Mangsho Bhat. It is a delicious medley of chicken or goat cooked in an aromatic curry of onion, garlic and ginger with tomato. Potatoes are also added in this curry to create a milder, richer flavor. Mangsho Bhat is a must have quintessential dish on every Sunday in every Bengali house. Last Sunday when I prepared it for us, I thought why should baby Prisha miss all this yummy nutritious food? So I decided to make a special bowl for her, filled with all the goodness minus the heat of the spices.

Ingredients:
  • Rice – 2 tablespoons, washed
  • Salt – 1 pinch
  • Turmeric – 1 pinch
  • Garlic Powder – 1 pinch
  • Ginger Powder – 1 pinch
  • Garam Masala – 1 pinch
  • Chicken/ Beef – 1/3 cup, washed and cut in bite size cubes
  • Ghee – ¼ teaspoon
  • Potato – 1, small, peeled, cut into halves and washed
  • Tomato – 1, medium, washed and cut into medium cubes
  • Onion – 1 tablespoon, chopped

Directions:
  • Heat a skillet/ pan over medium heat.
  • Add the Ghee in it.
  • After about 20 seconds, add the Onion with the Ginger and Garlic Powder. Sauté for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add the Tomato, sauté for 1 minute.
  • Add the Rice, Potato and Chicken, fry till the chicken turns golden in color.
  • Add the Salt, Turmeric and Garam Masala. Stir to mix.
  • Add about ½ cup of lukewarm water, mix and cover with the lid.
  • Let it cook for 10 minutes on low heat.
  • Stir then cover and cook for another 10 minutes. Add more water if required.
  • Once the Rice, Potato and Chicken completely cooks, turn off the heat.
  • Serve to your baby at room temperature or slightly warm (if they can eat on their own, you may want to slightly mash the vegetables) or puree in your blender or Nutri Bullet
  • Adjust the consistency of the puree before serving to your baby.
  • This puree can be kept in the fridge for 1-2 days.
