Chole Chawal (Chickpea curry with Rice)

We decided to cook Chole (chickpeas) for our dinner and immediately this puree came to my mind. We didn’t use any baking powder or soda to cook the chickpeas so they may need some extra time to cook.

Whether you are using canned chick peas or dried, make sure that they are completely cooked beforehand. We will be cooking them again with the vegetables and rice. With beans I go with overcooked rather than under. Chickpeas are a delicious second food for our babies. To make sure that they have been cooked very well, test by mashing the chick peas with your fingers. Do not be tempted to add more than 1-2 tablespoons when first introducing it to your baby.

Chick peas are an incredible source of iron for our babies. They also have folate, iron, vitamin B6, and zinc. However, be mindful when serving chickpeas to your baby for the first time. Just like Orange and kidney beans, chick peas may also upset their developing digestive system. Prisha just loves chick pea curry and because she prefers eating table food now (she is 1 year 5 months old right now), I mash the chickpeas and vegetables very well before serving to her. If your baby hasn’t yet started table foods make sure to make a smooth puree for them.

Ingredients:
  • Carrot – 1 big, peeled and cut in big pieces
  • Sweet Potato – 1 cup, peeled and cubed
  • Chickpeas – 2-3 tablespoons (fully cooked)
  • Tomatoes – 3-4, cherry
  • Rice – 2 tablespoons, washed
  • Peas – 2 tablespoons (I used frozen)
  • Salt – 1/8 teaspoon
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/8 teaspoon
  • Garam Masala – 1/8 teaspoon
  • Ghee – ¼ teaspoon
  • Onion – 2 tablespoons, chopped finely

Directions:
  • Wash all the vegetables.
  • Add all the ingredients in the pressure cooker.
  • Add 1 cup of water, cover and cook for 3-4 whistles over medium heat.
  • Once the pressure drops, allow it to cool down a bit. Then mash lightly with a spatula to check if everything has thoroughly cooked.
  • If your baby is eating table foods, then this is ready to be served to your baby (I like mashing everything lightly). You can also puree in your blender or Nutri bullet.
  • Always adjust the consistency of the food/ puree before serving to your baby. If you see your baby is having difficulty with the food, serve something else or make a thinner puree.
  • This puree can be kept in the fridge for 1-2 days.
